Koutoulofari is a traditional settlement of the Municipality of Hersonissos, with approximately 600 inhabitants. The settlement is built on the northern foothills of Mount Pyrgia, at an altitude of 100 meters, at a distance of 1 km from the Port of Hersonissos and 29 km east of Heraklion. Koutouloufari is mentioned in the list of the villages of Crete by Fr. Barozzi of 1577 under the name Catafari metochio as well as in the Basilicata catalog as Cutrufari.
It is a beautiful touristic area with charm villas in hersonissos, but maintaining quite a few traditional elements. The houses are amphitheatrically built with a wonderful view of the bay of Hersonissos, with continuous and dense construction that follows the terrain. In Koutoulofari, the visitor will admire and discover its beautiful corners while walking along the cobbled streets. Picturesque narrow streets run through traditional neighborhoods with beautiful, stone-built houses that depict bygone times, where simplicity and beauty prevailed. Old houses with arches and interior flowery courtyards covered with traditional vines an excellent examples of Cretan folk architecture.
The church of Agios Vasilios, built on the ruins of a single-aisled church from the 14th century, is noteworthy. Its extension dates back to 1840 and inside the church, the visitor can admire the wood-carved iconostasis.
In Koutouloufari you will find beautiful small hotels, rental apartments and studios, some of them restored. The new hotels are in most cases tasteful and in harmony with the aesthetics of the place. In Koutouloufari you will find also some of the most luxury villas in hersonissos. In the area you will find traditional cafes and taverns with rich Cretan cuisine. There are enough cafes and bars in the village.
