In Heraklion the high mountains and the fertile plains coexist and shape the morphology of the soil, significantly influencing the history, the special personality of the place and the people. Heraklion is surrounded in the east and the west by two large mountains. Mount Dikti to the east and Mount Idi (Psiloritis) to the west are the natural borders with the prefectures of Lassithi and Rethymno respectively. From the north side but also from the south, the prefecture is bathed by the sea. North of Heraklion is the rocky island of Dia. One can see it when traveling by boat from Piraeus just before reaching the port.
Generally the territory of this place is mountainous but there are also plains, such as that of Heraklion and Malia in the north, while in the south there is the large plain of Messara. However, there are flat areas on the mountains. The plateaus of Kasteli and Monofatsi are places of unique natural beauty. Large rivers are missing from the area, but there are smaller ones, such as the Geropotamos in Messara and the Anapodaris and Giofyros further north. The inhabitants are located, either concentrated in the capital, or in the many towns and villages, which are scattered throughout the prefecture. On the south side, the settlements that have been particularly developed and have become important states, are Arkalochori, Tympaki, Moires, Ano Viannos, Zaros, Agia Varvara, Pyrgos and famous Hersonissos hersonissos hotels crete . The bays of Heraklion and Malia and Cape Stavros are formed on the north coast.
